Our 14-day Fresco workshop begins on Monday afternoon. Transportation will be provided from both the Florence Airport (FLR) and the main train station in Florence (Santa Maria Novella) to our Villa in the Tuscan hills. Our photo album page has pictures of one of the Villas we stay at. We will enjoy the first of many dinners together as a group that
first evening. Each day we will pick you up at the Villa in a
comfortable, non-smoking, air-conditioned van and go to the Fresco
Workshop for coursework or we will depart for a field trip.
The Workshop will take place at Villa Godi with its inspiring landscape, a short drive from our Villa. Each day the Workshop will be intermixed
with practical and theoretical studies in the art of Buon Fresco and
visits to historic locales. Details of the exact Workshop syllabus are
somewhat flexible, but at least 8 of the 14 days are devoted to Fresco
painting and technique for the majority of the day. We will have full
and half day excursions to nearby Villages and Museums. We will also
make the short trip into Florence on a few evenings, visiting Museums
and/or going to dinner at our favorite restaurants. AlohaTuscany
prides it self on creating flexible itineraries for our guests. When
you sign up for the Workshop or Tour, a questionnaire will be sent to
you to help us learn about your interests and travel experiences. Using
the questionnaires will allow us to create a Workshop syllabus and Tour
itinerary that best reflects the personal interests of each of our
groups.
All
Supplies for the Fresco Workshop are furnished. This includes all
pigments, supports, brushes, plasters, etc. A bound instruction booklet
will also be provided for your future reference. Frescos will be done
on terracotta tiles and on wood supports (a special technique developed
by AlohaTuscany) that are small enough for you to take home. You
can expect to complete 2 or 3 painted frescos during the workshop.
We
will start right from the beginning with "What exactly is a
Fresco?" and move through the detailed how's and why's of Fresco
specific painting methods. We will travel through time with Fresco,
learning its techniques and applications from ancient paintings on cave
walls up to the present day. The process of Fresco creation is
fascinating, with patience required to achieve the perfect timing (momento
d'oro) for applying the pigment to the wet plaster (Intonaco).
Whether you are a novice or an accomplished artist, we will lead you
through the successful creation of beautiful frescos.
Breakfast will be served at the Villa. Lunch will either be Italian al fresco style at the Workshop or we will go out to a local tavola calda (literally "hot table," small bars/cafés with delicious food). Dinner will be at local trattorias or restaurants or we will enjoy dinner in Florence on a few occasions.
Most meals, with the exception of a few lunches and dinner on your free
day, are included in the Workshop price.
As
some people are sensitive to Perfumes, AlohaTuscany would
appreciate that all Workshop and Tour participants cooperate with us in
creating a perfume-free environment to ensure that all participants can
enjoy their time in Italy. We also ask that any smoking be outdoors,
away from the group. At the same time, keep in mind that we cannot stop
the locals from lighting up around smoke-sensitive tour participants.
